Insiders: Melanie of Whim Magazine

Q1: Thank you so much for chatting with us! To start off, would you mind sharing a brief introduction about you, your magazine and what you do?
A1: It’s my pleasure! My name is Melanie and I’m the Editor and Founder of Whim Online Magazine (, a blog which also releases digital magazine issues featuring dreamy and whimsical photography, fashion, art, DIY and bridal content.
Q2: What inspired you to start an online magazine?
A2: I’ve always been obsessed with beautiful imagery and pretty things, and was an avid reader of both blogs and magazines. I had completed a degree in creative writing and was beginning a new degree studying journalism back in February of 2013 when I decided to start Whim, so I was already quite interested in this field! I was also particularly inspired by other online publications at the time, such as IZE Magazine and Pony Anarchy. Both of these were run by girls of a similar age to me who were also still university students. Whim initially served as a platform for me to write about the things I loved the most and (thankfully) it just grew from there!
Q3: Judging by your website, we'd say you're probably pretty familiar with the latest and greatest DIYs, bridal fashion and more ;) What is most prevalent trend in event and party decorations for this year that you've seen? (Particularly colors, design, themes, etc)
A3: I’ve noticed succulents have been huge of late, mostly as table centrepieces and sometimes even as wedding party favours! I’ve also seen many beautiful images featuring events concentrating on colour schemes including pastel hues (especially blush pink) with gold. I think pastels and metallics are perfect for just about any event – weddings, bridal showers, birthdays, baby showers. Another prevalent decoration trend is the use of pineapples, which I think adds a fun and summery vibe to any party!
